The Lessons of Games

Action Items for Managers

If working for you is too easy, you’re doing something wrong. While simplifying work and increasing efficiency may make financial sense, any activity that’s devoid of challenge leads to boredom. To keep employees engaged, feed their need for competence by extending new challenges, rewarding learning, and increasing responsibility.

Make everyone a hero. For work to feel meaningful, we need to see a connection between our contributions and the well-being of others. Helping employees see the way their work has had a positive impact on other people—whether it be coworkers or customers—can be a strong motivator. Putting employees face to face with end users, sharing thank-you letters, and framing recognition within the context of how employees’ work has impacted their clients make ordinary tasks feel more meaningful.

Use positive feedback strategically. Employees are dependent on positive feedback to guide their behavior and shape their focus. When you recognize an employee’s actions, you tip the scales, increasing the perceived value of a particular behavior. Instead of simply offering positive feedback anytime an employee executes effectively, focus your comments on the elements you want to grow, feeding his need for competence while nudging him in the direction that will benefit the team’s performance.
